Flagpole - LIVE REVIEWS: NOAH AND ELITE THA SHOWSTOPPA
w/ Elite Tha Showstoppa
Thursday, Jan. 27 @ The Max Canada
I’d never seen a show at The Max Canada before and thus didn’t really know what to expect from the popular and expansive watering hole. With a few pool tables pushed to one side and a moratorium on darts, however, that little back corner stage offered a nice, if awkwardly positioned venue for both a smooth, funky R&B outfit from Atlanta, and Athens’s premier MC.
With no need for a last name, NOAH stormed into Athens with honey-smooth vocals and some impressive instrumental chops to match. Joined by a soaring electric guitarist, drummer and conga player, NOAH showed off his jazz background on the keyboards all night, riffing in the high-end one moment only to leap across the ivories and hammer home gorgeous, low-end chords that at times worked almost like a walking bassline. Every song seemed to build to an epic conclusion, whether via NOAH’s vocal gymnastics (comparable to Maroon 5’s Adam Levine) or his guitarist’s skyrocketing, Funkadelic-flavored solos. This is an act that could play the the Variety Playhouse, New Earth Music Hall, or even Aftermath if they were so inclined, and that’s a pretty exciting prospect for both Atlanta and Athens.
With the long-ago departure of ElemenO.P., the recent disbandment of Deaf Judges, and the general dearth of Athenian rap talent to begin with, it seemed almost criminal that this was my first time seeing Elite tha Showstoppa, and as it turns out, it was. Not only have I never seen a local rapper this talented, I would go so far as to say I’ve never seen a local rapper even half this talented. Ripping through his prerecorded beats with the ferocity and fire of P.O.S. and the bouncy, finger-waggin’ flow of Brother Ali, Elite was joined by a vivacious backup singer whose blow-the-walls-down gospel accents shot clear to the rafters. I’ve seen acts play venues four times this size and not convince a single person to dance, but by night’s end, The Max Canada was gettin’ down en masse. The Athens rap scene may be a touch anemic right now, but that doesn’t make Elite’s status as the best of the bunch any less meaningful. His name says it all. He’s in a class by himself.

Myers Quad is a weird place. For many, it’s little but a vacuum sucking in Ultimate Frisbee enthusiasts from seemingly across the globe.
But for some, such as University graduates Charlie Key and Greg O’Connell, it’s a place where long-lasting friends are met and musical collaborations are born.
It was 2005 when Key and O’Connell met — honors kids, one a comparative literature major and the other studying genetics. Inconspicuous enough, at the time. But soon enough, this unassuming duo would form one of Athens’ weirdest, most intriguing bands: Bubbly Mommy Gun.
Asking the pair for musical influences probably won’t help you get a good idea of their band, unless you’re familiar with ’60s-’70s era Brazilian music.
“The tropicália movement in particular,” Key noted.
O’Connell had a comment that was slightly more illuminating:
“It’s more of an experimental approach where Charlie Key and I just sort of do a number on each others songs, dance all over ’em, then it ends up getting kind of messy for a while then we kind of make sense of the mess,” O’Connell said. “It’s a fun process.”
And you can hear it down there, underneath the wild echoes and screeching feedback; sweet little pop tunes that the band — now with drums and bass along with keys and guitar — has molded into an absurdly original version of itself.
“I know the two of us really like music that’s a little more ambiguous,” Key said. “There is more of an emotional truth to a bit of ambiguity.”
Key and O’Connell started writing together in the same place they met: Myers Hall.
“We were really good friends before there were two guitars in the room,” O’Connell said. “And then one day there were, and it was great.”
And those long hours of dorm room jamming evolved into the perfectly melded, out-of-the-norm sound that BMG has today.
“Given all the time with the two of us just playing together, we were able to match what we were doing musically more than we would if you had a rhythm section,” Key said.
The band, fully formed in 2008, quickly joined up with other quirky local acts such as Quiet Hooves, which had influenced Key and O’Connell from their freshmen days.
“Being a member of that collective helped us take some more legitimate steps in terms of actually putting music out in a streamlined process and coming up with art to go along with the band, and on top of that getting shows with those bands,” Key said.
That collective features a slew of experimental bands on the local indie label Party Party Partners, who all seem to share a profound interest and support of each others’ creativity and originality.
“It helps if you are making music that is different or new to be working on it in a group of people who are trying to do the same thing,” Key said.
“What all of us enjoy the most is something that sounds new to us, or doesn’t quite sound like anything we’ve heard but also sounds like things that we love. When things start to sound familiar, we know that we have to change it somehow.”

Show Review: House Party!

Surviving the cold with Androcles and the Lion, Sam Sniper, and Nate Nelson
Saturday night found me traversing through the icy cold air once more, excitement for the tunes keeping my fingers from freezing off. I feel like hypothermia is the order of the day when it comes to bands this season. But hey, you can't miss a chance to see a potentially awesome band just because there are icicles forming on the tips of your hair.
Now, I rarely write about the shows that I see outside of downtown, but the tunes owned Saturday night, and ignoring the highlights would simply be a crime! Androcles and the Lion was the first band that thawed out my ears a bit and caught my notice. Giving us a taste of soft, dark, and melancholy rock, their melodies pierced through the chill and and curled into the ears of those basking in the heat of the roaring fire a short ways away.
The next band ready to combat the cold was local music project Sam Sniper, a group that shares members with folk rockers Yo Soybean. Now I'll admit, as I'm not generally much of a country fan, I probably wouldn't have gone to see them otherwise, but I never pass up an opportunity to check out the side projects of the bands I like. It's one of the best ways to make new discoveries, after all! And, lucky for me, these guys were good. Sam Sniper surpassed all of my expectations by launching into a set full of country love songs fused with the most awesomely intense, hardcore rock. I know that sounds a bit insane, but their tunes were seriously tons of fun to experience and the crowd was definitely on my side. Everyone around me was dancing wildly, very nearly forgetting their frozen limbs in the excitement. I'd even hazard to say that it may have actually been worth freezing my feet so much that I still can't feel them two days later. Good stuff.
Then it was off to Farm 255 to finish the night. As my friend and I stepped into warmth, we caught the last few sweet bars of Nate Nelson's set. It was quite a fine ending to an extremely chilled evening.

Show Review: Itchy Hearts (Andy Cobb solo) w/ Tumbleweed Stampede and Grinnin' Bear @ THE MAX CANADA
1.3.11 At the end of 2010, The Max Canada sent shock waves through the Athens music scene, and has carried great momentum into the new year. Let's give credit where credit is due, and say that The Max Canada hosts the funkiest parties in town. On this peachy Georgia evening they didn't disappoint. When Grinnin' Bear first took the stage I was overwhelmed with beautiful yellow sweaters, baggy kakis, and golden marshmallow Afros. What more could you ask for from one of Athens brightest up-and-coming bands? Their Southern Americana charm won the hearts of everyone it reached. Speaking of hearts, all the way from Brooklyn, Itchy Hearts' journeyman, Andy Cobb, took the stage in soulful style. The lone man with his acoustic guitar, aged fables, and thick boots satisfied everyone's scaly winter itch. Someone give this guy a turkey sandwich. The fresh highlight of the night came from one Athens hardest-working bands, Tumbleweed Stampede. They hit the stage with their thrilling combustion of folk jam goodness. From the moment they began not a body was still. The good vibes radiated off the singlet wearin', birthday havin', shake-what-your-mama-gave-you, bass player, Tuna Fortuna, as the room jumped with a little left over holiday joy. The sweet smell of groove in the air swayed with the dancing people in to the wee hours of the night. The show marked the beginning of Tumbleweed Stampede's 2011 Mean Mugs EP tour, that took them up the East Cost, making stops in Chapel Hill (NC), Richmond (VA), Philly, NYC, and Brooklyn (Whoa!). As for the future, the new partnership between The Max Canada and Wonder.Lab productions is proving to be a much needed asset to the Athens music community.
